The Kings Head Theatre, 115 Upper Street, Islington N1 1ON

This engaging play by Dermot Murphy, and directed by Simone Vause, portrays many of the issues that people who live below the poverty line in the developing world face

daily, but which are relevant to us all. Set in South America, THE CONDOR & THE MAIDEN follows the lives of a daughter and her mother. Disputes over land and family loyalty become entwined in their daily struggle to scrape a living, while the mother tries to ensure a better future for her child.

This play was shown at the Kings Head Theatre, Islington, from the 2nd to the 21st March 2010. The performances of Sunday 7th March and Friday 12th March were in aid of Friends of Bolivia, with all proceeds going to the charity.

Comedor Infantil Santa Ana de Cala Cala

The Comedor Infantil Santa Ana de Cala Cala provides one balanced meal a day for 270 poor children in Cochabamba.

Centro Educativo Maria Inmaculada El Alto

The centre provides day-care, education and medical attention for children from poor families.

Plan 3000 Escuelita de Valores Humanos, Santa Cruz

Friends of Bolivia helps by providing the funds to pay for one balanced meal a day for the children.

Instituto Psicopedagocio Ciudad Joven San Juan de Dios

The institute helps children with disabilities, mental health issues anddrug addiction with a variety of medical and educational services.

Amigos de Niños Excepcionales Tarija

ANEThelps children and young people between the ages of 0 to 21 in thedepartment of Tarija, who have learning, physical and sensorydisabilities.

Every £1 you donate (£1=10Bolivianos) will go towards the improvement of the lives of these children.

12 Noon: Mina Alaska (Dir. Jorge Ruiz, 1968) 84mins.

Our first film honoured Jorge Ruiz, one of the pioneers of the Bolivian film industry. Probably most famous for his documentary Vuelve Sebastiana, Ruiz is considered the father of indigenous Andean cinema, and has won international acclaim for his work.

Mina Alaska (Alaska Mine) tells the story of Jenny Smith, a young American journalist searching for her long-lost grandfather in the mountains of Bolivia. When she finds her grandfather’s one-time partner and fellow gold-prospector, Rodrigo Diaz, he gives her answers that she didn’t expect.

3pm: Cocalero (Dir. Alejandro Landes, 2007) 94mins

A lively story about geopolitics, popular movements and indigenous culture, Cocalero follows Evo Morales during his 2005 campaign for the Bolivian presidency.

6.30pm: Los Andes no Creen en Dios (Dir. Antonio Eguino, 2007) 105mins

Set in Uyuni in the early 1920s, Los Andes No Creen en Dios (The Andes don’t believe in God) paints a stark picture of life in a small mining village in Bolivia at the beginning of the 20th century, as the lives of five characters interweave in a whirlwind of passion and adversity. (This film is not suitable for the under 15s)

As in previous years, a team of women ran the 5k marathon (previously known as the Flora Light Women’s Challenge) for Friends of Bolivia.  Many thanks to the runners and all those who sponsored us or supported us on the day.
